You will learn the principles of recovery-orientated practice, and communication techniques to build and maintain relationships, and you will learn how to support people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drug issues.
Details of the online course

This online qualification will equip you with the knowledge and understanding to help those affected by mental health issues.

This online course reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery-orientated support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. The online course will involve implementing community-based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness, and psychiatric disability.

The requirements for this qualification include a minimum of 80 hours of work placement to achieve the course outcomes for the following units of competency:‍
o CHCMHS002 Establish self-directed recovery relationships
o CHCMHS003 Provide recovery-oriented mental health services
o CHCMHS004 Work collaboratively with the care network and other services

If a learner is currently working in the industry some sign-off against the work placement hours will be accepted from their workplace. For learners who do not currently have a suitable workplace, the Hader Institute of Education will assist the learner in finding a suitable facility. The learner will utilize a work placement log book to record their hours of work placement. The learner is required to sign a confidentiality agreement with the facility.

Requirements

Student entry requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have completed their education to a level which is equivalent to an Australian Senior High School Year 12 or has completed and a  AQF Certificate IV in Community Services.
  • Have suitable language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and comprehend learning materials and perform tasks related to recording workplace documents including reading and writing detailed reports, case notes, reports  and other documents, interpreting workplace policy and procedure and reporting hazards. Learners are required to pass an online LLN assessment test
  • Be capable of completing 100 hours of work placement in a suitable health facility.
  • Have sound computer skills to navigate simple software to complete the online component of this course and must be able to use intermediate-level Word features in order to produce and present word-processed  documents/ reports.
  • Have access to a laptop and internet to complete this online course.
  • Have a valid Working with Children Check (or be prepared to obtain this prior to work placement)
  • Have a valid Police Check (or be prepared to obtain this prior to work placement)
  • Have the required immunisations, including COVID-19 vaccination, as required to attend the placement facility. Please note, additional immunisations may be required given Government or placement facility’s health policy changes.
  • These entry requirements will be confirmed through information collected on the enrolment form and during the enrolment interview.

How will you learn online?

This is a blended online delivery model which incorporates Trainer led synchronous online zoom classroom sessions for 3  hours per week in the evening, a monthly one-hour one-on-one mentoring session with your trainer (zoom, phone), 7 skills development and practice sessions – (4 hours online face to face each 6 weeks) plus you will need to complete 22 hours per week undertaking structured self-paced study.

All online learning and assessment materials are accessed via the student online portal. You will have the support of an online trainer & assessor throughout your online studies.

Hader Institute of Education provides support to all online learners through the trainer and the Hader Institute of Education Learner Support Officer.

Online Assessment requirements

The online assessment is conducted using a combination of realistic workplace tasks, projects, knowledge tests, response to case studies and completing practical demonstrations.
