The ACM20117 Certificate II in Animal Studies will qualify you to work in a pet store, shelter, kennel or cattery.
This animal studies course is superseded by ACM20121 – Certificate 2 in Animal Care. For now, you may still enrol in this course, and we will transition you to the new course at no additional cost once it is available. There are no mandated education entry requirements for this qualification as per the ACM – Animal Care and Management Training Package.
To successfully complete this certificate course, it is recommended that students:
Be over 16 years of age
Have language, literacy, and numeracy skills that ensure the ability to read and comprehend technical terms and communicate effectively through email. These skills are equivalent to those that would be required to successfully complete year 10
Access to a modern computer with high-speed internet
Basic computing skills including the ability to make a short video

Provide basic care of dogs
Enables the learner to identify areas of the workplace where resource improvements can be made. In hindsight of the previous modules, the learner can use the acquired knowledge and skill to identify resource inefficiencies in areas of food and water supply and hygiene.
Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices
Introduces the learner to animal dietary requirements and how to fulfil those through the supply of food and water. This module focuses on the daily animal care practices.
Feed and water animals
Introduces the learner to regular hygiene practices in animal care workplaces. With this module the student will learn about the daily animal care practices.
Complete animal care hygiene routines
Provides the learner with the knowledge and skills to assist experienced staff in providing care for domestic dogs. In this module the student will learn how to identify common breeds of dogs, behaviour, how to train a dog and how to meet health and care needs.
Provide basic care of dogs
Provides the learner with the knowledge and skill to assist experienced staff in the assessment of animal health. While this module focuses on animal health, it will also assist with the learning in the following module.
Provides the learner with insights into how to deal with first aid requirements. It also introduces the learner to emergency situations that may arise while working within animal care facilities.
Introduces the learner to the day-to-day activities that take place within animal care facilities. it also provides the learner with the knowledge and skills to manage administrative duties and provide customer assistance.
Provide reception services for an animal care facility
Provides the learner with the skills to be able to provide reliable advice. This helps the learner understand how to interpret information requirements to be able to provide quality information when working in an animal care facility.
Provide information on companion animals, products and services
This is an essential unit that will assist the learner in sourcing animal related information. It also contains important knowledge in regard to applying the correct medication dosages to the animal as required.

Amanda has been a Veterinary Nursing and Animal Studies Trainer/Assessor at Open Colleges for the last five years.
With over 15 years’ experience as a Veterinary Nurse, Amanda also manages her own Grooming Salon. She enjoys sharing her experience and knowledge with students, supporting them throughout their stages of enrolment & work placement.
She holds a Diploma in Emergency & Critical Care (Veterinary Nursing) & is a member of the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia.
The workplace will need provide a range of services to various animal species. The workplaces which would offer this could include:

You will need to complete your placement in a general dental practice. Your workplace must be a registered business and be involved in the delivery of dental services.
Requirements include access to paid clients, as well access to equipment and resources used in the delivery of general and specialised dentistry services.
Work placement for this qualification will be completed in two sections to allow you to observe and practice your skills via simulation before you begin the practical component.
Pre-Structured Work Placement duration:
50 hours of simulation minimum
Structured Work Placement duration:
250 hours of practical experience minimum
